Impurities in the source material translate directly into defects in the deposited film, with negative effects on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>hardness and structural compactness<\/strong> of the coating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>adhesion to the substrate<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>color and uniformity of the finish<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>corrosion resistance<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standard purity grades range from<strong> 99.5% up to 99.99% (4N)<\/strong> and beyond. The choice depends on the application: high-performance functional coatings require higher purity compared to purely aesthetic finishes. The management of this parameter falls directly into the <a href=\"https:\/\/lemgalvanica.com\/en\/services\/quality-control\/\"><strong><em>quality control<\/em><\/strong><\/a> of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Geometry and technical specifications<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shape of the target is not standardized: it depends on the configuration of the deposition chamber and the type of source employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Circular (planar):<\/strong> the most common format. Compatible with standard circular magnetrons, it ensures good erosion uniformity. Typical diameters range from 50 mm to over 500 mm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rectangular (planar):<\/strong> suitable for large-format chambers or deposition on flat, elongated substrates. It optimizes coverage on non-symmetrical geometries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tubular (rotating):<\/strong> the target rotates during deposition, distributing the erosion over the entire cylindrical surface. This brings the material utilization rate to over 80%, compared to the 20\u201330% typical of planar targets, offering a significant advantage in terms of cost per cycle and production continuity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing the correct geometry is part of the industrialization process that LEM manages internally before starting production on <a href=\"https:\/\/lemgalvanica.com\/en\/plants\/physical-vapour-deposition-pvd\/\"><strong><em>PVD systems<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and it depends on the type of objects treated and the materials used to grow the coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Efficiency and thermal management<\/em>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During deposition, the target absorbs a considerable part of the process energy and heats up. Inadequate cooling can cause deformations, variations in the erosion rate, and plasma contamination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, targets are integrated into systems with <strong>active water cooling<\/strong>.
